Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) a nutrient present in every cell of the body, essential to chemical reactions which allow the body to produce energy. It may also restore glucose availability in tissues such as the skeletal muscle. There are several reasons you should supplement with ALA. First, the body produces barely enough of this nutrient to keep up with metabolic demands, and the amount decreases as you age. Second, ALA functions as an antioxidant only when it's present in excess. If you have only a small amount in your body, it will be used for energy production rather than antioxidant protection. Third, it may be difficult to obtain sufficient quantities of ALA through diet alone.
